A three day entrepreneurial “Boot Camp” run by Unlocking Cornish Potential (UCP) is helping to guide 45 graduates as they launch their own businesses in Cornwall. UCP is a Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) programme, managed by Cornwall College and receives ESF (European Social Fund) Convergence investment.  Held at the new Tremough Innovation Centre in Penryn, on April 12th and April 13th (with final business pitches on Wednesday 18th), more than thirty business advisors and support partners were on hand to test out the graduates’ ideas and help them develop their plans. These included representatives from Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), Oxford Innovation, Cornwall College, Tremough and Pool Innovation Centres, Cornwall Development Company and Catalyst NLP

From high end art consultancy, a smoothie bar on the beach and a screen printing studio to a luxury knitwear brand, underwater photography and an environmental building consultancy, the huge cross-section of industry and innovation has impressed the various facilitators and business professionals at the event.

Richard Snell is Manager of the new Tremough Innovation Centre and also worked with the graduates during their Boot Camp seminars:
We are really excited to be welcoming the UCP Grad Start Up Boot Camp event this April as part of the continuing partnership between UCP and TIC centred on supporting local entrepreneurs.

Using the Boot Camp as an assessment centre with “Dragon’s Den” style pitches on Wednesday (18th April), around 70 entrepreneurs over the next two years, will be selected for a 12 month support package. Twenty-five graduates are already benefitting from the programme in addition to the 45 who have attended this latest Boot camp. Successful graduates gain financial support; bespoke business skills training; 40 hours of mentoring from industry experts; regular meetings and advice from an experienced business coach as well as organised events and networking opportunities. Chris Phillips is Programme Manager:

The UCP Graduate Start Up Programme is a truly fantastic project to manage.  Not only do I get to spend my days working with some amazing, innovative businesses, but I get to work with some amazing, talented Graduate entrepreneurs too.  The personal highlight for me has to be seeing how much the Graduates grow and unlock their potential as both people and entrepreneurs.  It’s true what they say, business really is all about the people, and with these guys, the Cornish Economy is in safe hands.

The programme is run by UCP which has over ten years of experience recruiting and supporting graduates into key projects within Cornish businesses to help them grow. After using our successful model of training, mentoring and financial assistance for our 2010 Graduate Start Up programme, UCP is delighted to be recruiting again from now until September 2013.
